December Newsletter

Welcome to our Headteacher's Newsletter!  Across our school there are a huge range of activities, events and instances of exciting and active learning.  My newsletter will capture and share a range of these activities to showcase our wonderful school community

What a productive and enjoyable term!  As is always the case, our pupils have been the stars of the show .. and as you can see from the below photos, our pupils have been Rock Stars and Nativity Stars too!

Last week we took part in the interactive Times Tables Rock Stars initiative.  The programme involves a series of specialist online and ‘on paper’ quizzes and games designed to reinforce times table comprehension and practice that is proven to boost pupil recall.  To get (us all!) into character and ready to learn we dressed the part too!  Across the school, pupils quite literally, rocked Rock Star Day!  We couldn’t have been more delighted with the level of pupil interaction and engagement with the day – great work everyone!  As you can see from the below photos it wasn’t just our times tables that looked impressive!

Our Reception class are Rock Stars for the day (pictured rehearsing their Christmas Performance).

Years 1 and 2 were the stars of our Wilmington Primary Nativity.  As you have seen for yourself … they were absolutely marvellous!  It was such a treat for them all to be able to be in the performance together.  Our Year 4 pupils enjoyed a wonderfully immersive Roman Day.  We have been learning about Roman culture, their empire and the battles they fought.  Pupils made shields and headdresses in readiness for their Celts and Romans battle re-enactment!  And you can see how fearsome the armies looked from the below photos!  Using their learned forestry skills, pupils foraged for materials and built a Roman fort before heading back to enjoy a Roman snack!

Our Year 4 Romans are perfecting their pottery skills as they make traditional clay Roman vessels.

Year 6 pupils took part in a Cookery Workshop at Wilmington Grammar School for Girls as part of their Design and Technology curriculum.  Pupils learned the techniques required to make, knead and roll dough, before safely using the oven to bake their cheese scones.  It was a brilliant practical lesson enabling pupils to put to use their newly learned skills!

Year 5 pupils enjoyed a Greek Day to coincide with their study of Ancient Greece and how the Ancient Greeks influenced the modern world.  Pupils explored and researched Greek pottery and art before designing their own Greek pot design.  Pupils learned about Greek theatre before making Greek masks.  The final activity of the topic was to make and dress a traditional Greek salad and flat breads.  In groups, pupils prepared and cut the vegetables and cheese, made a salad dressing and weighed and prepared the flat bread dough.

Year 6 pupils have been working on a bird box DT curriculum project that is linked to our commitment to the ECO Schools initiative.  As part of the design process pupils first conducted market research before creating four working designs of their ideas.  They then chose one of their ideas to make a prototype model of, and finally, conducted an evaluation of their design and its viability as a working product.  Very professional work indeed!

Wishing all our families and children a very Merry Christmas … we look forward to hearing all about your festive break when we see you back at school on Wednesday 4th January.

Very Best Wishes,

Charlotte Scott
